Welcome To The Lieder Theatre online....

When the Rain Stops Falling is an extraordinary play; a contemporary masterpiece of Australian theatre.
Written by Andrew Bovell, who also wrote Lantana, Head On, Edge of Darkness and After Dinner, the play is a multi-layered story that spans four generations and two continents.
When the Rain Stops Falling explores patterns of betrayal, abandonment, destruction, forgiveness and love, all unfolding with humanity, surprising humour, and hope.
The play begins with a miracle in the year 2039 in Alice Springs. A fish falls from the sky and lands at the feet of Gabriel York, still smelling of the sea. It’s been raining for days and Gabriel knows something is wrong.
Fifty years earlier his grandfather predicts that fish will fall out of the sky, heralding a great flood which will end life on earth as we know it. This sets in motion a great journey of discovery to solve the mystery of the strange beginning. Who’ll stop the rain?
When the Rain Stops Falling won the 2008 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and the 2008 Queensland Premier’s Literary Award.
With an excellent Lieder cast featuring Judith Boyd, Pauline J Mullen, Michelle McAleer, Greg Seckold, David Rayner, Josh Waters, Brian Hill, Amanda Aitken, and Shane Daly, When the Rain Stops Falling will amaze and surprise local audiences.
This new Australian play is not to be missed.

Doreen Mullen

Vale Doreen, who passed away quietly on Wednesday 9th May at approximately 4:45pm.
Doreen was a vibrant member of the Lieder family who inspired and encouraged us to challenge ourselves and live for the day, forever curious and keen to learn more.
Doreen's spirit will live strong in our memories.

Miles Franklin's Brilliant Career

The Lieder is currently in workshop with an exciting new script about Miles Franklin written by Jennifer Lamb.
Under the guidance of dramaturg Annabel Scholes, this little known slice of Goulburn’s history will receive a gala opening performance for Goulburn’s 150th birthday celebrations in March next year.

Another world premiere of a fascinating local story brought to life by your local theatre company.

Regional Arts Funding

The Lieder has received a grant of $2000 from Regional Arts NSW for our latest Country Arts Support Project in 2012. The CASP grant will assist us to engage a puppeteer for our children’s play The Magic Pudding, planned for later this year.

This exciting production will be created for performances at the Lieder, and also with the possibility of a regional tour. Stay tuned!

Ambassador Program

When the Rain Stops Falling marks the beginning of a new project with members of Goulburn’s youth who have a passion for live theatre.

The Lieder Theatre’s ambassador program has received support from four local schools – Mulwaree High, Goulburn High, Crookwell High and Trinity Catholic College. Selected students from each of these schools will be rewarded with free tickets to see Lieder shows during 2012, and will also be given discounted tickets to share with their friends and family. These students will also be given the opportunity of support and assistance from the professionals working at the Lieder.

If the project is successful this year, it will continue to grow in future years for more students and schools. Do you know a young person with a keen interest in theatre? Let us know so that we can encourage and support them in exploring their interest.

Tallong Apple Festival

A big thank you to Jack, Maddi, Xanthi, Isabella, Julia, Miffy, Lee, Colin and CJ who attended the Tallong Apple Festival on 6th May. They face painted, stilt walked and clowned their way through the day, winning awards for most unusual and entertaining crowds on the way.

From the President - Pauline J. Mullen

Vale Doreen. Your friendship, passion, humour and support guided not only our theatre family but the whole community. You will be ever present with us at the Lieder. All our love and condolences go to Doreen’s family here in Australia, and in the UK and New Zealand.

Good news...the Lieder Theatre Company has been successful in receiving funding from the NSW Government through their Community Building Partnership Program 2011. The funds will contribute to the refurbishment and repair of the Lieder Theatre to create a more sustainable model for the Goulburn community.
In partnership with the Goulburn Group, who have advised and supported the Lieder Theatre Company’s endeavour to become more sustainable, a successful energy efficiency assessment was undertaken by Tim Whitaker of EnCall. As a result of this and the funds received, Stage 1 of Imagining the Future: The Lieder Theatre Sustainability Project is able to be completed. All non-stage lighting throughout our building will be replaced by LED lighting. Our front of house and backstage refrigerators, and our hot water service have already been replaced with more energy efficient models.
Thank you to the Honourable Pru Goward MP and the NSW Government. To be successful on this occasion has enabled us to feel a little more optimistic about the maintenance and long term future of our building. It also lifts the morale of our numerous volunteers and businesses who give so generously to the day to day running of our building through in-kind support.
Thanks also to Jennifer Lamb and Chrisjohn for assisting with the grant application. Our success with grants has been minimal in recent years, so let’s hope this starts a trend!
And to quote Doreen –
‘Goodbye Mrs Mullen, we press on regardless’.

Getting to know you...
This month we're getting to know Associate Director Judith Boyd, who you'll soon see on stage in When the Rain Stops Falling...
Judith Boyd

Age, hometown, occupation
Yes, I'm aged. The old grey mare ain't what she used to be!
I live in Crookwell, and they tell me I'm retired although you could have fooled me!

How long have you been involved with the Lieder Theatre?
I joined the Lieder family in 2001.

How did you become involved at the Lieder Theatre?
We moved into the area from Sydney, having first established there was a theatre to join. I wouldn't have moved otherwise. Having moved, I introduced myself to the committee and the rest, as they say, is history.

What's your favourite Lieder production?
Am I allowed to have one of my own productions? If yes, then I loved Equus - the cast were amazing and the play is brilliant. If no, then my favourite is Macbeth.

Favourite memorable Lieder moment?
All the rehearsals and performances of The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

What does the Lieder mean to you?
Lost of late nights, hard work, and lovely talented people. It is a very special place to be.

What plays would you most like to see on the Lieder stage?
I love theatre; as long as a production is well performed and directed then I enjoy it all. I would love to see us do something like 'Little Shop of Horrors', but at the same time I would love to see a production of 'Long Day's Journey Into Night'. If it makes me laugh, cry, or just think, I'm happy. If it does none of the above, I would rather sit at home with a good book.

Do you have a dream part you'd like to play?
Yes. Chrisjohn please take note! Lyubov Andreyevna (mama) in The Cherry Orchard. Unfortunately I think I am probably too old to play her now as she has a daugher of 17 and I could have a granddaughter of that age. However, we live in hope!

What do you do when you're not at the Lieder?
Sleep, eat, read, play bridge, write plays, play lots of word games on the internet, and play poker.

The Lieder invites you to applaud our major sponsor for 2012
We would also like to thank the following for their generous support of our company
